The suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Monday, arrived at the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential Panel for the continuation of investigation of corruption allegations against him.
Magu, it was revealed at the weekend, failed to submit the audited accounts of the anti-graft agency to the National Assembly as required by law.
According to Section 37 of the establishment act, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment, ETC) Act 2004, the commission is required to submit its report, including its audited account to the National Assembly every year.
Magu who was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday last week, arrived at the State House Conference Center (Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa), Abuja, at about 9am.
The former EFCC boss is facing a 21 corruption allegation brought against him by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
In a statement by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, he explained why President Buhari approved the suspension of embattled ex-EFCC boss, saying someone occupying such office should live above board.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has urged an Ikeja Special Offences Court to deny popular social media influencer, Adedamola Adewale, bail.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Samuel Daji, the lead prosecuting counsel for the anti-graft agency, made the plea on Monday during Adewale’s bail hearing on a charge of possession of fraudulent documents.
NAN reports that Adewale is popularly known as Adeherself.
“I urge the court to refuse the bail of the defendant and order accelerated hearing,”Daji said.
Earlier, the defence counsel, Mr Tunde Salami, had applied to the court to grant bail on liberal terms to Adewale who had been remanded in EFCC’s custody since July 7.
Following the submissions of the defence and prosecuting counsel, Justice Sherifat Solebo, adjourned the case till Wednesday for ruling on the bail application.
NAN reports that the defendant was arrested following intelligence reports received by the EFCC on the activities of some young men allegedly involved in internet fraud in the Lekki axis of Lagos.
According to the EFCC, Adewale had on June 15, with the intent to defraud, had in her possession a fraudulent document entitled “WhatsApp.”
The offence violates Section 318 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,”Daji had said. (NAN)
Education commissioners in the 19 Northern States have resolved to reopen schools only when it is safe to do so, following the spike in cases of COVID-19.
The commissioners in a communique in Kaduna on Saturday, after a virtual meeting to consider schools reopening and other issues to strengthen the education sector, said keeping schools closed in the face of the spike in COVID-19 cases across the country was a sure step to ensure that children remained safe.
The communique was signed by Dr Shehu Makarfi, Commissioner for Education, Kaduna State, who is also the Chairman of the northern states School Exchange Programme (SEP).
According to them, many states may not have the financial strength to embark on such a huge capital-intensive project.
Concerned members of the Nigeria Bar Association in Abuja have petitioned the Abuja branch of the body, demanding probe of alleged rape of a young female lawyer by her senior colleague, Mr Adebiyi Adetosoye popularly known as ‘Prince’.
The petitioners said the incident might embarrass the NBA and expose its members to unwarranted ridicule unless necessary action is taken to clear the name of the association from Adetosoye’s mess.
The petitioners said Adetosoye’s case raised concerns given his affiliation with NBA Abuja Branch also known as Unity Bar.
They also said that the rape allegation against Adetosoye at this critical period that sexual assault became rampant in the country was unfortunate and calls for thorough investigation and prosecution if found guilty.
The victim alleged that Adetosoye paid her Branch Dues and took advantage of the gesture to rape her.
The petitioners said the if the allegation is true, then Adetosoye took advantage of the young lawyer because she was vulnerable.
According to the petition, “Sometime around the 19th June, 2020, an allegation of rape was anonymously made against the Adebiyi Adetosoye also known as ‘Prince’.”
“The screenshots of the conversation chat show that the lady was taken of, with impunity.
“While Adetosoye is not required to prove his innocence, his response with threats to persons who showed concern for the victim was worrisome.’
“He has even claimed that he would deal with them if they do not backoff from asking questions or investigating the allegation.”
“What is also worrisome is that Adetosoye’s response also contains admissions of vote buying preceding Branch and Presidential elections.”
“Inducement or payment of Practicing Fees and Branch Dues by Candidates or their proxies is clearly against the guidelines issued by the ECNBA.”
“we are concerned that the Victim may have been threatened or subdued into silence.”
” It would amount to a double jeopardy if the victim is silenced and a perpetrator is allowed to go scot-free, especially if it is someone who is supposed to be a minister in the Temple of Justice.”
“Consequently, we request you that you kindly investigate this allegation and take appropriate actions.”
“If Prince Adetosoye is found to be responsible, he should be reported to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) for engaging in conduct incompatible with the status of a legal practitioner. If he is found to be innocent then the law should take its course.”
“We also call on you to look into inadvertent admission by Adetosoye, of Vote Buying and Inducement of young lawyers.”
“If we condemn this sort of unfair advantage in the name of ‘kindness’ outside, we should condemn it within the legal profession.”
Also the Nigeria Bar Association asking colleagues to contact them if found any available information
The presidency has said that the current probe of suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, shows that there is no sacred cow in the Buhari-led administration’s fight against corruption.
In a statement released on Saturday, July 11, Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the current probe of Magu’s activities shows that the antigraft war is real and no respecter of persons. Shehu said the nature of the allegations leveled against Magu shows enough grounds for a detailed investigation to be conducted.
The statement reads
”A series of documented allegations were made against the Ag. Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Following a preliminary review of the allegations leveled against the Ag. Chairman and several other members of his staff, there were grounds for a detailed investigation to be conducted.
Hence, an investigative panel was constituted in compliance with the extant laws governing the convening of such a body.
As is the proper procedure, when allegations are made against the Chief Executive of an institution, and in this case an institution that ought to be seen as beyond reproach, the Chief Executive has to step down from his post and allow for a transparent and unhindered investigation.
The EFCC does not revolve around the personality of an individual, and as such cannot be seen through the prism of any individual.
Therefore, the suspension of Mr. Ibrahim Magu, allows the institution to continue carrying out its mandate without the cloud of investigation hanging over its head.
The EFCC has many good, hardworking men and women who are committed to its ideal and ensuring that the wealth of our country isn’t plundered and wherein there is an act of misappropriation such person(s) are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, Mr. Magu is being availed the opportunity to defend himself and answer the allegations against him. This is how it should be, as is the fact that under the Laws of Nigeria every citizen is presumed and remains innocent until proven guilty.
We must realize that the fight against corruption is not a static event, but a dynamic and ever evolving process, in which the EFCC is just one actor; and as we continue to work towards improving our democratic process so shall every institution of ours also embark on that journey of evolution.
What is however important is that there must be accountability and transparency and our people must realize that they would be held to account. This is the building block in the fight against corruption, the establishment of the concept of Accountability and the recognition of the Rule of Law.
Those who see Mr. Magu’s investigation, as a signal that the fight against corruption is failing, have unfortunately, missed the boat.
There is no better indication that the fight is real and active than the will to investigate allegations in an open and transparent manner against those who have been charged to be custodians of this very system.
Under this President and Government, this is our mantra and guiding principle. There are no sacred cows, and for those who think they have a halo over their heads, their days are also numbered.
Mr. Magu was not immune – and regardless of the obvious embarrassment that potential acts of wrongdoing by him, given the office he held, may appear for the government.
No other administration in the history of Nigeria would have moved to bring into the light and public domain such an allegation.”
Arowolo Olamide Temitope, a Nigerian lady who was barred from boarding an evacuation flight to Nigeria by the Lebanese airport management after receiving orders from her employer in Lebanon, has finally arrived Nigeria.
Arowolo who was evacuated from Lebanon by the Federal Government on Saturday July 11, narrated her ordeal while in Lebanon, warning young Nigerian girls against travelling abroad.
Arowolo, 31, was among 19 other victims on who were received by officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport In Abuja, today.
A video of Temitope circulated on the internet regarding the violation of her human rights in Lebanon. She said in the viral video she was beaten by Mahmoud Zahran, the husband of her employer, Feyzeh Diab, on April 25, at their home in Choueifat, South of Beirut, after accusing her of stealing a phone.
She continued narrating instances of emotional, physical and sexual assault she recieved from Zahran and Diab.
After the video went viral, the Federal Governmen asked Lebanese authorities to bring her back to Nigeria.
Temitope, speaking to journalists at the Abuja airport, said Lebanon was like ‘hell’ for her and cautioned Nigerian girls against being lured abroad.
She said, “I’m happy being home. Going to Lebanon is like (going to) a hell. Nobody knows that will happen there. I advise other girls to stay here in Nigeria and try to make it the way the Lord puts them through, because going outside there was like a hell, not only in Lebanon. What I experienced in Lebanon, I pray even not for Satan to experience it.”
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe (APC-Oyo) described Temitope’s return as “a dream come true.”
“Today, Temitope is back home, unfortunately, I will not allow her show her face, the whole issue has not come to an end we really want to understand what happened in court back in Lebanon.
“We are happy, she is happy to be back home.
“I hope this will be a sign to others young girls out there who want to go abroad for greener pastures to ensure that the circumstances they are going into are the expectations they have when they signed up for these agents,” she said.
Arowolo’s employer had accused her of stealing $5,000 and attempting to kill him. Her prosecution in court had been stalled as the accusers failed to show up, while she was granted bail.
The committee had, however, said it was established that Arowolo suffered abuse and sexual harassment from the husband of her employer, Mahmoud Zahran, during her sojourn in Lebanon.
The Nigerian man who was filmed being tortured by a dreaded Pakistani gang after he was used as collateral has been identified as Ekenedirichukwu Innocent Chima.
A video of him has been released to assure Nigerians of his safety after a group of wealthy Igbo men came to his rescue and contacted the gang leader, Nuruz, to let him know as they will pay to secure Chima’s release. They also assured Chima that they will not abandon him in Pakistan.
Apparently, their video was shown to Chima and he also recorded a video of his own to thank the Igbo men working to save him.
He said he saw the video and thanked them for their kindness. He also thanked Nigerians and assured everyone that he’s still alive.
Recall that Chima was used as collateral by a man named Andrew. However, Andrew absconded afterwards and the Pakistani gang tortured Chima and threatened to kill him on July 10 if Andrew doesn’t return with their money.
Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika has explained why social distancing is not observed in aircraft following the resumption of flights amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Minister who spoke as he embarked on a simulation return flight to the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano to assess the preparation of the airport for resumption of flights, said the cabin is safer than any hospital theatre because of the purifying procedures air circulated within the cabin goes through.
Sirika added that the non-adherence to physical distancing was responsible for the ‘affordable’ ticket fare.
He said;
“Because of the nature of the airplane, the airplane is hygienic enough once you have your mask, you are safe to remain seated on your seat and where possible, we will keep the distance.
“Airplanes are designed in such a way that the ambient air at altitudes is clean. It is not contaminated. The air is dropped in the aircrafts, pressurised and because of pressurization, the temperature of the air goes up to 200 degrees which is twice boiling water and there is no bacteria or virus that can survive it and it is suddenly cooled to about 2 degrees centigrate and then it is passed to a filter.
“Passing through the filtration system ensures that every single organism is screened and then it is passed to the cabin and once it is passed through the cabin, it comes from the ceiling downwards.
“So, it is not coming from the cockpit to the rear, it is from the ceiling downwards and it drops on the floor and gets circulated.
“With this mechanism in place, everything will be safe provided that we are decontaminating the airplane before we enter and decontaminating after we leave and also cleaning all the possible surfaces that one will touch.”
