Haro Gandu, a lawyer with the Kaduna state ministry of justice, has been killed while his wife and son were abducted.

Timothy Gandu, a former commissioner of economic planning, who is the deceased’s brother confirmed the incident to TheCable.

He said the attackers gained access to the house by breaking the window.

Gandu said the bandits shot his brother on the shoulder as he was attempting to escape.

“It is the same narrative of criminality everywhere. Bandits invading communities and breaking into homes, killing and abducting people,” he said.

“They came to the house in the on Sunday night, pulled down the window and gain access. “They first shot him on the shoulder, he wanted to escaped, they followed him and shot him on the back and he died. They abducted his wife and son.”

Mohammed Jalige, spokesman of the Kaduna state police command, could not reached as his mobile phone was unavailable at the time this report was filed.

Kaduna is one of the states with a high rate of insecurity.

Last week, about 60 people were said to have been killed in various attacks on communities in Kaura, Kajuru, Kauru, Zangon Kataf and Jama’a local government areas in the southern part of the state

Gov Bello Spends Hours Clearing Gridlock On Lokoja-Abuja Road

Touched by the plights of motorists stranded along the ever busy Abuja- lokoja highway, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Sunday evening, joined officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agents in controlling the traffic.

The gridlock, it was learnt was caused by heavy down pour over the weekend and repairs been carried out on the Janata bridge coupled with an acident involving an articulated vehicle

Governor Bello who arrived Jamata area of the state with his security men and some aides, spent over five hours directing the flow of traffic that has kept travellers at one point since Friday night.null

Our reporter gathered that the governor who arrived the scene at about 06.30pm in the evening called other security heads in the state to deploy more personnel to join his security in controlling the traffic.

Speaking to our reporter, Governor Bello said his action followed the brief he got on the traffic situation along Lokoja-Abuja road especially between Kpata in Lokoja town to Koto, the Kogi/Kotonkarfe local government of the state from his security details on Saturday.

The governor stated that he decided to visit the scene after another briefing on Sunday that travellers were still stranded on the road.

”I was properly briefed about the hardship the commuters have been going through in the last two days on this road. I was told few officers of the FRSC were seen in controlling the traffic and that no vehicle could even move an inch.

“I have been here since 0645pm and this is 1025pm with some of the officials of the FRSC and other relevant agencies. The good thing is that vehicles are now moving, hopefully, if the commuters can sustain and maintain this orderliness we have established the gridlock will disappear because disorderliness, impatient are the major causes of this gridlock”, he said.

The governor however criticised slow response to emergency road situation by the officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) saying they have not done enough

He noted that there was an accident involving two articulated vehicles on a single lane on the bridge while maintenance work was going on the second lane.

He blamed the FRSC for not responding quickly in evacuating the lorries considering the usual heavy daily traffic on the highway

”I understand that one of the lanes of the bridge has been under maintenance and travelers from Lokoja/Abuja were made to use only one lane; unfortunately, two articulated vehicles collided on the single lane resulting in this gridlock”, he said.

The governor was seen commending commuters and drivers for their patience while urging that relevant agencies should deploy more personnel to ensure quick clearance of the road.

Some passengers who spoke on the development said they were held up by the gridlock for several hours.

They commended the governor for his presence at the scene, noting that without his intervention, no vehicle would have been able to move.

Court orders EFCC to return Mompha’s int passport, wrist watches and iPhone

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been ordered to release all items seized from Ismaila Mustapha popularly known as Mompha by a federal high court sitting in Lagos.

Justice Liman who ruled on a July 6 application filed by Mompha’s counsel, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), ordered the return of the items which include five luxury wristwatches, an apple iPod, an iPhone 8 device and a pair of sunglasses. They are reportedly among the items found on him during his arrest last October 19, in Abuja.

The federal high court judge who noted that the prosecution has the right to seize a property during an arrest, likewise a duty to approach the court for an interim order, stated that due process must be observed and failure to do this is considered illegal. Liman further averred that the items had been with the EFCC for eight months already.

He said;

“None of these items was listed as exhibit, none of the items was listed on the charge. At this stage, there is nothing on record that the items seized is being investigated on.
“The retention of the property without compliance with due process violates the requirements of Section 29 of the Act”
“Failure to release the property is illegal. As at today, no charge has been filed regarding the items. It is too long to withhold the applicant properties.”

Mompha is standing trial alongside his company, Ismalob Global Investment Ltd, on an amended twenty two-count charge bordering on cyber fraud and money laundering to the tune of N33 billion.

WhatsApp Limits Message Forwarding

With billions of people unable to see their friends and family due to COVID-19, people are relying on WhatsApp more than ever to communicate. People are talking to doctors, teachers, and isolated loved ones via WhatsApp during this crisis.

Last year the social platform introduced users to the concept of messages that have been forwarded many times. These messages were labeled with double arrows to indicate they did not originate from a close contact. In effect, these messages are less personal compared to typical messages sent on WhatsApp.

We are now introducing a limit so that these messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time.

As a private messaging service, we’ve taken several steps over the years to help keep conversations intimate. For example, we previously set limits on forwarded messages to constrain virality. At the time, we saw a 25 per cent decrease in total message forwards globally,” the social platform said.

It said not all messages forwarded are bad because many users forward helpful information, as well as funny videos, memes, and reflections or prayers they find meaningful. “In recent weeks, people have also used WhatsApp to organise public moments of support for frontline health workers.

However, we’ve recently seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding which users have told us can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation. We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.

“In addition to this change, we are working directly with NGOs and governments, including the World Health Organisation and over 20 national health ministries, to help connect people with accurate information.

Together these trusted authorities have sent hundreds of millions of messages directly to people requesting information and advice.

You can learn more about these efforts, as well as how to submit potential myths, hoaxes and rumors to fact checking organisations, on our Coronavirus Information Hub,” it added.

It said it believes that now more than ever people need to be able to connect privately. “Our teams are hard at work to keep WhatsApp running reliably during this unprecedented global crisis. We’ll continue to listen to your feedback and improve ways for people to share with each other on WhatsApp,” it added.

No Date Yet For International Flights Resumption — Minister of Aviation

Hadi Sirika, the minister of aviation, says no resumption date has been announced for international flight operations.

There had been reports that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had selected October 15 as the resumption date for international flights.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the minister said the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) only issued a routine 90-day notice to airmen (NOTAM).

International flight resumption date is not October. NAMA just issued a routine 90-day notice to airmen (NOTAM),” he wrote.

“In liaison with health, foreign affairs & PTF COVID-19, we will announce the agreed date, regardless of the ban by Europe, UAE etc. May be earlier than October.”

The nation’s airports were closed on March 23, 2020, to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Domestic flight operations began across the country on July 8 with the Lagos and Abuja airports while Kano, Port Harcourt, Owerri and Maiduguri airports reopened on July 11.

Sirika had earlier said the federal government will not rush to resume flights because whatever decisions to be made would be in the interest of the public.

“You are very aware that so many countries had placed a ban on countries that we cannot go even from Nigeria,” he said at the time.

“Also Nigeria, of course, will place a ban on other countries that cannot come in here. Everyone is trying to keep safe.

“These and many other reasons will make us be cautious and study some more and liaise with stakeholders to decide when we will open international flights.

“Within the sector, we want to reopen because we are bleeding and losing money but we have to remain alive first before we make money. Whatever decision we take has to be in the interest of humanity in general.”

At present, flights have to receive approval from the ministry of aviation before operating any flight can be operated; only diplomatic and essential flights are allowed.

12 EFCC officials get suspension letters

NO fewer than 12 Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials were suspended indefinitely on Monday.

One of the officials had his car pushed at the Banquet Hall Wing of the Presidential Villa before it could start.

According to findings, all the 12 got their suspension letters yesterday.

A top source said: “After being in limbo for one week, we got our suspension letters on Monday.

“We were informed that the suspension is indefinite. We have taken it in good faith. But most of us have not received queries in our career.

“We have not even appeared before any disciplinary committee. We appeal to President Mummadu Buhari to intervene by reversing the suspension.”

Some of those who appeared before the panel included some crack investigators, zonal heads and those in the Legal Unit.

One of the officials said: “It wasn’t a friendly session but we were able to make some clarifications on our performance in office.

“A Coordinator told the committee that service and loyalty to Nigeria guided their conduct in office rather than sentiments

Air force unveils identity of classmate who knocked down Nigeria first Pilot combat share details of investigation

The NigerianAir Force (NAF) has unveiled the identity of the secondary school classmate who knocked down Tolulope Arotile, Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot.

Ibikunle Daramola, air force spokesman gave the name of the man as Nehemiah Adejoh and also disclosed that he and two other civilians were at the Nigerian Air Force base in Kaduna to visit the wife of a squadron leader.

He further revealed that Tolulope Arotile was awaiting deployment for her next assignment when the sad incident occurred.

The full statement reads;

“The Late Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, a Squadron Pilot at the 405 Helicopter Combat Training Group (405 HCTG) Enugu, attached to the Air Component of Operation GAMA AIKI in Minna, having recently completed her Promotion Examinations, was in Kaduna awaiting deployment for her next assignment. During this period, she stayed with her sister, Mrs Damilola Adegboye, at Sabo Area in Kaduna, visiting the NAF Base whenever necessary.

“On 14 July 2020 at about 10.55am, Late Flying Officer Arotile received a phone call from her colleague, Flying Officer Perry Karimo, a fellow helicopter pilot from the 405 HCTG, who wanted to discuss arrangements for their return to Enugu, requesting that she comes to the Base so that they could work out the modalities. Subsequently, at about 10.58am, the Late Arotile placed a call through to Squadron Leader Diepiriye Batubo, the Group Operations Officer (GOO) of 405 HCTG, who was in Minna at the time, to clarify issues regarding her deployment. It must be highlighted that the call FROM Flying Officer Karimo as well as the one TO the Squadron Leader Batubo both took place before 11.00am, over 5 hours before the incident which led to her death.

“Flying Officer Arotile was later conveyed from Sabo to the NAF Base Kaduna by her sister, Mrs Adegboye, where the Deceased dropped her phone for charging at a house in the Instructor Pilots’ Quarters belonging to Squadron Leader Alfa Ekele. Her elder sister later dropped her off at the Base Mammy Market at about 4.00pm, where she proceeded to photocopy and laminate some documents.

“It was while she was returning from the Mammy Market at about 4.30pm that 3 of her former schoolmates at the Air Force Secondary School (now Air Force Comprehensive School) Kaduna; Mr Nehemiah Adejoh, Mr Igbekele Folorunsho and Mr Festus Gbayegun, drove past her in a Kia Sorento SUV, with Registration Number AZ 478 MKA.

“It is noteworthy that Messrs Adejoh, Folorunsho and Gbayegun are all civilians who live outside NAF Base Kaduna, but were on their way to visit one Mrs Chioma Ugwu, wife of Squadron Leader Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who lives at Ekagbo Quarters on the Base.

“Upon recognising their schoolmate, Arotile, after passing her, Mr Adejoh, who was driving, reversed the vehicle, ostensibly in an attempt to quickly meet up with the Deceased, who was walking in the opposite direction. In the process, the vehicle struck Flying Officer Arotile from the rear, knocking her down with significant force and causing her to hit her head on the pavement. The vehicle then ran over parts of her body as it veered off the road beyond the kerb and onto the pavement, causing her further injuries.

“Flying Officer Arotile was subsequently rushed to the 461 NAF Hospital Kaduna for treatment, while Mr Folorunsho (one of the occupants of the vehicle) who is also an Accident & Emergency Nurse at the St Gerard Catholic Hospital Kaduna, administered First Aid.

“Flying Officer Arotile was confirmed dead by the On-Call Doctor at the 461 NAF Hospital at about 4.45pm on 14 July 2020, as a result of the head injuries.

“The trio of Messrs Nehemiah Adejoh, Igbekele Folorunsho and Festus Gbayegun were immediately detained at the Air Provost Wing, 453 Base Services Group Kaduna as investigations began. They were subjected to Toxicology Tests at the 461 NAF Hospital but no traces of alcohol or psychotropic substances were found in their systems. It was however discovered that the driver of the vehicle, Mr Nehemiah Adejo, did not have a valid driver’s license.

“Having carefully considered the foregoing, the preliminary investigation concluded that: The death of Flying Officer Arotile was caused by blunt force trauma to the head and significant bleeding resulting from being struck by the vehicle.”

Daramola affirmed that the case would be transferred to the police for further investigation.

Nigerian man commits suicide after being accused of rape by a Twitter influencer

A young Nigerian has allegedly committed suicide after being accused of rape by a Twitter influencer who refused to provide further details.

#JusticeForIzu is currently trending on Twitter after a user named Legend Izu Madubueze took his life when a Twitter influencer named Nanichi Anese published his name and other names as men accused of rape.

JIt was revealed that Izu reached out to Nani and asked to know who he raped but she didn’t have a good answer, instead she claimed the accuser wanted to remain anonymous. She later said the alleged victim said it was a “non physical sexual assault”.

Izu kept trying to clear his name but Nani was not cooperative.
Izu later left a note apologizing though he stated that he doesn’t know what he did or who he hurt that led to him being accused.
His last tweet was on Friday, July 17, and it reads: “Oh and if you’re reading this, I’m dead lol.”
He eventually committed suicide and Nani has deactivated her account after Izu’s suicide was made public.
Older chats from Izu’s phone allegedly shows that Nani had asked him out before but he declined.
At the moment, Nigerians are demanding Justice for Izu.
